Conscious breathing is simply noticing your breath and letting it slow down, rather than leaving it to run unnoticed in the background. There is nothing to achieve and no correct way to do it. You are only bringing awareness to something the body already knows how to do. ‍When I started out with yoga and meditation, I didn’t think of the breath as anything much. It was just something the body did in the background while the real work happened elsewhere. It took me years to understand that I had it the wrong way round. Deep, slow breathing softens the body’s guarding and lets held feeling move, so tears, laughter or a deep stillness often rise to the surface. This is a natural release, not a sign that anything is wrong. I’ve seen it happen so many times that it still surprises me. Someone comes in carrying the whole week in their shoulders and their jaw, breathing in that tight, shallow way we all recognise. We don’t do anything dramatic. We just breathe, slowly, with a lot of care, until the body decides it’s safe to feel again. As the breath deepens, the guarding softens, and the feelings underneath have room to come up.
